Apart from the obvious hilarity from seeing a one year old covering themselves in icing, cake smash sessions are also funny to watch because you get to see a child enjoy a ‘taboo’ delight.
I recently had Ali in to the studio for her cake smash session in the week before she turned one. Ali was probably one of the more refined ‘smashers’ I’ve had in the studio and mum managed to take home a largely intact cake! She did enjoy herself, but I’m not sure she was terribly fussed about getting icing all over her!
But, like most of the bubs I get in the studio, she started out hesitantly. It’s funny because in regular, routine life, we’re always trying to keep our kids neat, tidy and clean – we’re constantly washing their hands and wiping food off their faces. Yet, in a cake smash session, we’re doing the exact opposite – we’re encouraging them to get stuck in and get as dirty as possible.
Ali had such a cheeky grin about her. A couple of times she tried to topple the cake stand with her feet and you could see that grin come through as she tested the waters! She would often turn her big beautiful eyes towards mum to check whether she was still allowed to grab a bit of icing!
It was so great meeting Ali and Kaity and I look forward to welcoming them back later in the year for some family shots before and after the birth of bubba #2!
