This past weekend I attended the first ever Baby Summit – a conference of sorts – for newborn, birth and maternity photographers. It was developed by Brisbane Newborn Photography Kelly Brown and her team.
It really was an amazing experience. I was able to watch some of Australia’s most recognised photographers in action (there were quite a number of demonstration sessions held of the course of the weekend), I heard from some business professionals who encouraged us to spend time not only working in our business, but ON our business, and of course, the trade show! (I have come home with some beautiful posing fabrics, baby outfits and great ideas for products for my clients).
Two of my favourite photographers were presenters at the conference – Sue Bryce – a glamour photographer who now lives in LA, and Erin Hoskins of Erin Elizabeth Photography in Perth. I treasured every moment that I was able to watch them work and hear them speak. How generous of them to freely impart their knowledge!
It was also really fantastic to connect with some 300 other newborn photographers in a very encouraging setting. So often businesses are trying to compete with each other, but in this atmosphere, every single other person I met were only encouraging towards each other.
So, what does this mean for me? Well, it means that I will be spending the next couple of months working towards getting my business in the position I want it to be. I will be setting the tone for my future. I will be photographing what I really love – which is newborns and weddings. I will be finalising my new pricing structure and developing an entirely new product base for my clients. I have met a range of suppliers for prints, albums and canvases which I am excited to work with and encouraged by the quality of their products.
What does this mean for you? Great images, beautiful products and an experience you’ll want to tell all your friends about.
I’m so excited for the future.
